Yup cantaloupe...it was a delicious suprise. And to think, next year I'm going to have a tough time with having cucumbers now or cantaloupe later!

Stacy, thanks for the update. I let the fruit on this year's volunteer vines keep growing and it turned out to be cantaloupe too. And it was delicious. Now I'm wondering if the plants I had a few years ago were also cantaloupe. I've never planted cantaloupe seeds so they must have been from store bought cantaloupe seeds in the compost pile.

update: There were a were a few of these tastey little "cucumbers" left on the vine and I was tired of eating them so i just let them go. Well, today I went out the garden. I hadn't been out to the end of the garden where these were growing in a few weeks. Much to my surprise, these "cucumbers" had turned into canteloup. They looked and smelled like canteloup melons. So I picked one and brougt it inside and cut it open. Sure enough, orange flesh like a canteloup, and tastes like one too. Has anyone ever let them keep growing like this. It was amazing to me that the very same thing that looked, smelled and tasted like cucumbers could look, taste and smell like canteloup later on. Weird!

Rotating crops is an option if one has the space. I only have two garden beds that are fairly close together. The bug followed me to the new plot.

Sevin will work to kill the bug along with all beneficial insects and pollinators. It's a toxic chemical so I choose not to use it.

This year only one of my plants got the bug which I removed from the stem. The plant healed and all three are still producing fruit and flowers. It took four seasons but I am now relatively bug free.

you forgot an important element: do NOT plant zucchini in the same spot next year- MOVE IT to avoid the same problem with the larvae living there. I just hit them with Sevin in June when they start growing well, and rotate locations any year I have borer problems.

I have three volunteer vines this year and one of them is producing what looks like cantaloupe. I haven’t had another one of those yummy melon cucumbers again, but I still have a few vines that haven’t made fruit yet.

i'll have to look again at the leaves, but from what i remember they are not as prickly as regular cucumbers. these melon looking cucumbers are very tastey! mine definately didn't come from a seed packet as they are in a different part of the garden as my regular ones. hmm. i like them so much that i think i'll save some seeds from them to plant next year!
