One Seed Chicago 2011

One Seed ChicagoVoting for One Seed Chicago is now underway. The event, now in it’s fourth year, is designed to unite Chicago area gardeners through planting a common seed. The three candidates this year are radish, eggplant and swiss chard.

All Chicago area gardeners are eligible to vote for one of the seeds. And there are prizes! Everyone who votes receives a free packet of seeds in the mail and one gardener will be randomly selected to win a TB57 Lithium Ion Battery Cordless String Trimmer / Weed Trimmer provided by the very generous folks at Troy-Bilt.

I’m voting for the eggplant. This is probably the most challenging of the three seeds. The growing season in Chicago is not long enough to sow eggplant seeds directly into the ground so they must be started indoors and moved to the garden after the danger of frost has passed. They can also be grown in a container on a patio or balcony. Radishes are too easy and I’ve successfully grown swiss chard many times, so eggplant is my choice for 2011.

Voting for One Seed Chicago runs through April 1st, 2011.

Tulips

There is a beautiful flower bed in the center of the street right outside my office building in downtown Chicago. The tulips are so lovely this year I just had to share.

Chicago River Geese

On nice days I like to go for a lunchtime walk. Today I was walking along the Chicago River and there was a goose sitting in one of the planters.

Geese will nest in some pretty strange places so I suppose it could be a female sitting on some eggs. I don’t know enough about geese to be certain. A second goose was floating nearby on the river and neither seemed threatened by my presence.

I stopped by the Chicago Flower and Garden Show this week. There were lots of nice landscaping displays, how to setup a rainbarrel, bulbs and herbs for sale, assorted vendors and of course lots of flower beds and an abundance of tulips and daffodils.

My favoirte display was Del Agua Viene La Vida by the National Museum of Mexican Art. It had winding paths, trees, plants and several lovely little ponds, one that I almost stepped in.

I wanted to go home and start digging up the yard, but it’s still too cold and muddy to turn the dirt. I’ll have to wait a few more weeks.

A few of my photos are pictured below.
