Don’t wait too long to buy seeds for your vegetable garden. According to a recent AP story some of the more popular varieties may be difficult to find this year. A combination of factors could cause seeds for home gardeners to be in short supply. Demand in the United States is up. A record number [...]
Thinking Spring

After enduring two weeks of below freezing temperatures and over a foot of snow we are finally starting to thaw out. Temperatures have been balmy, snow is melting, birds are chirping (well, a chirp here and there), and the sun peeked out from the clouds. My tolerance for winter wears out very fast. I’m ready [...]
Almost Winter

There are still 18 more days until it’s officially winter but I feel as if it’s already here. The garden is, for all purposes, dormant. Sunday I hauled the rosemary bush into the garage where she will hibernate until spring. The last of the herbs have been picked and the roots covered with mulch until [...]
LadyBug Invasion

Lady Bugs or Asian Lady Beetles, I can’t tell the difference. But they are all looking for a warm place to spend the winter! For the past few days I’m finding these little guys are all over the yard. They keep wandering into the house, and I keep sending them back to the garden. They [...]

This little guy walked right onto the deck and stopped a few feet away from me. I wouldn’t mind them in the garden if they weren’t so destructive. As soon as they see freshly tilled dirt they start to dig. Too bad if I just planted seeds there.

The herb garden is plentiful right now. September is when I start cutting them back and freezing them for winter. It’s best to do this now while they are at their full flavor. Here’s what is growing outside my kitchen door this year:
Ripe Tomatoes

Finally! I leave the tomatoes on the vine until they are completely ripe and ready to eat. Last week I started picking them. I use my own seeds taken from the best fruit in past years. Last year I grew early girls, romas and cherry tomatoes. These tomatoes look like a cross between early girl [...]
Autumn Lettuce

It’s time to plant a second crop of lettuce. I put the seeds in a few days ago. With all the cool weather we are having I should have lots of lettuce in no time. This year I’m planting Mesclun. It perfers the cooler autumn weather and doesn’t do very well as a spring crop [...]
